I know we just posted some YSL content a couple days ago, but damn if I can't get those sneakers out of my head. the ready-to-wear line designed primarily by Stefano Pilati is 95% awesome, with much attention being paid to the details across the minimal yet well-rounded accessories, clothing, jewelry and shoe collections. these items are understated yet opulent - and dangerously close to my range of affordability.

Hedi Slimane shoots for YSL

The extremely talented Hedi Slimane recently shot this photo series at Yves St Laurent for their relaunch of YSl Rive Gauche Homme. The shoot takes a trip trough the house of YSL, including photos of Pierre Berge, YSL's partner. It is nice to see these two working together again, as Slimane started his design career with the fashion power house, and as you can tell from the shoot it is a beautiful partnership. WIngs and Horns S/S 09

Vancouver-based and manufactured line Wings and Horns have just shown their spring/summer 09 collection, which looks the logical evolution of the line - understatement and refinement in high-end streetwear. their collaboration with Dayton from this season past was a huge hit, so expect a larger general interest in the line for S/S. and while I'm a little more partial to W+H's lower-end line Reigning Champ, I would love to get my hands on the flannel shirt and the side-zip trainers.

Brooklyn Machine Works

the continuing dry weather has been proper for getting out and having some mashing rides. the more time I spend on my bike the more I figure out how to manipulate it, and what it's limitations are.. and while I'm not quite pushing it to the brink of failure, I definitely think about what sort of setup might work better for different sorts of riding. Brooklyn Machine Works hand-make frames and parts right in NY, and their Gangsta bike (pictured above) is a track frame that is geared far more towards the fixed-freestyle side of things as opposed to the velodrome. with enough frame clearance to barspin 700 series tires, this is the jam! I'd also like to have one of the TT Cruiser bikes (pictured below) for cruising around in the 'hood. with a great manufacturing mantra, full lineup of urban + offroad bikes, and a distinct style, BMW is definitely pushing it forward.

one of the more awesome displays of public performance art I've seen in a while, brought to you by Improve Everywhere.. on January 10th over 2500 people in 22 cities took off their pants and casually rode the subway. this vid comes from the NY event, in which over 1200 people took part. as you might expect, the expressions of the faces of unsuspecting subway riders are priceless.

John Prolly + Urban Velo

the weather has been decent lately, so the riding is back! peace out snow! Mishka NYC cohort and fixed-gear tastemaker John Watson (aka Prolly) recently wrote a super informative piece in one of my favorite bicycle reads, Urban Velo. charting the rise of fixed-gear rationale and providing a great perspective on why we ride, he continues to be at the forefront of this rapidly evolving scene and does a great job in the documentation. whether its on the Mishka Bloglin or on his own site Prolly Is Not Probably, I always really enjoy Prolly's content, and this article is no different. read it here!

A.P.C. Spring 2009

There are so many different lines currently featuring their upcoming spring collections, but because I basically live in A.P.C. denim I am more than pleased to showcase their spring 2009 lookbook here on 84/85. I haven't yet managed to get my hands on any other pieces from the line itself but with the styles featured in this lookbook I think now is a good time to start. The full line looks so good, with the presentation being so on point. A.P.C pieces by themselves are very clean and plain but when put together as a whole the end result is nothing less that amazing.

Hard Graft: Pocket Wallet

Hard Graft was featured on 84/85 as one of our first posts, with the 2Unfold bag. This company is one that is always on some next levels, and this time I have decided to feature their Pocket Wallet. A good wallet is hard to find, as usually they are far too bulky or just plain badly designed. All that I want is a slim profile wallet that fits nicely into my back packet as if it wasn't even there. This design is beautiful and the functionality is right on, as its made of heavy-duty felt and leather with the right amount of space for the essentials: money and cards. The herringbone elastic loop holsters everything in place so you don't have to worry about losing its contents, just the wallet itself..

Woolrich Wollen Mills on Blackbird

Blackbird Seattle has featured their pre-ordered Woolrich Wollen Mills pieces coming spring/summer 09 on their blog. WWM is another one of my personal favorite lines at the moment, as they've really refined that workwear aesthetic. Blackbird will receive a small amount of pieces from this collection which they are taking pre-orders for at this current time. The chambray Trail shirt is definitely the stand out piece in my eyes, but I would be happy with any of these items. Check Blackbird for more info.

Light Lane: Laser Bike Lanes

As a cyclist of the urban roads I know (from experience) how dangerous it can be out there. Not only do you have to look out for debris on the road, potholes and just plain ignorant and inexperienced drivers, but night riding brings all sorts of new issues, visibility being the main one. One thing that makes for a safer, more comfortable ride especially at night is finding yourself on a road honored with a bike lane. Bike lanes give you the confidence of knowing that you have your own designated area to ride in. The problem with bike lanes is that they are a rarity out there and are usually only found on the busiest streets. Alex Tee and Evan Grant of Altitude have come up with this concept bike lane, the Light Lane. The Light Lane is a virtual bike lane that is projected onto the road with a laser, giving the cyclist a clearly defined passage on the road at night time. This is a great concept that would make it much safer to ride your bike on the mean streets at night.

With spring/summer time nearing (hopefully sooner than later) it is time to start thinking about shedding the flannels, bulky knits and sweaters, jeans and boots, for short sleeve button downs, tees, cuffed shorts, chinos and some loafers. Tod's has you covered in the loafer department with tons of different Italian made beauties to choose from, with my favorite being the Gommino/Moccasin loafer model. It is available in a great variety of colors and constructed with the traditional methods that goes into every Tod's piece. These would be a great addition to any guys footwear collection, more specifically the royal blue or grey ones for mine.

Stephen Sprouse for Louis Vuitton

Recently Louis Vuitton had a big night for the upcoming tribute release of the Stephen Sprouse collection for Louis Vuitton. Sprouse was an artist/designer from New York in the who created the most of his work through the 80's. The night was started with a party at the Soho location of LV with the Marc Jacobs designed bag collection on display. Then the night carried on at the Deitch Gallery showcasing works from Sprouse, finally ending at a Club on the Bowery where Debbie Harry was performing. The night was definitely one for the books, with three separate parties in one night, Marc Jacobs wearing LV tights, Debbie Harry, and the Front of the Soho location smashed with a big straight letter, once again showing that graffiti has a huge influence on the fashion world.

As I move away from wearing sneakers and start wearing more dress shoes, sometimes I just want that happy medium. Schmoove offers that middle ground, with a good range of styles to choose from. The profile of the dressier models are really clean looking and would pair up well with a suit or dressed down with some denim. The shoes are really on point, but I'm just asking myself about the name, Schmoove.... really?

Swaim + Christina Hutson, the founders/designers of OS, apparently plan to show a collection in februrary from their new project, which now becomes something we eagerly await. these are a few of my favorite looks from the OS spring/summer 09 line.

Timberland Boot Company on Oak

With the weather being the way it is (snow, rain, wind, ugly), its time to break out the boots. When we had our mini blizzard a couple of weeks ago I resurrected my 6" wheat Timberland boots. I wasn't sure if they would work with skinny jeans but I was pleasantly surprised with the end result. Oak NYC just recently got in these new Timberland boots and they are looking great. I was unaware that Timberland did such good, slimmer profile boots but sure enough they do, leave it up to Oak to figure that one out. These three models are looking solid with a good looking profile and height, probably about 9" - perfect for stuffing some skinny apc's, or as presented by oak, a more full fit as well. Check out Oak for these and a bunch of other great pieces, as they are also having their season end sale so you might find something for a great deal.

Fighting Ghosts

last night the CBC aired the second part of its special feature 'Fighting Ghosts,' which showed the war in Afghanistan from the helmet-cam perspective of soldier Glen Villa. Villa, who is only 22 years old, was extensively interviewed and provided a sobering and insightful perspective on Canada's involvement in the region. thoughtful, emotional, and connecting, the CBC did an amazing job on this one. if you missed it I highly recommend clicking the above link and watching the videos.

Villa's story, however impactful, is not the first of its kind to emerge from the front lines. over the last few years the rise in unauthorized, soldier-made battlefield footage has been extraordinary. showing how raw combat really is, these films if nothing else provide an unwashed perspective on war, allowing the viewer to construct their own opinions without media interference. below is a video shot by Scott Kesterton, featuring Canadian troops in combat with Taliban insurgents in the Panjawi district of Kandahar Province of Afghanistan.

The 'workwear' label has been popping up quite a bit on the Sartorialist as of late. It seems that this look is really solidifying its spot in the fashion word, and with the right styling it is now seen as a very legitimate aesthetic. Pairing authentic, well cut flannel with some worked in selvedge or raw denim and a good boot like a Redwing Irish Setter will always be seen as classic and timeless. Scott Schuman (the Sartorialist), has caught some very well put together looks, and here are a few of my favorites.

The Band of Outsiders S/S 2009 collection has been featured before on 84/85, and this time around its the Sperry Topsider shoe collaboration that's has being featured and seen in full. With styles ranging from all-over velcro to a distressed black model featuring safety pin closures and a full rubber loafer, they're perfect for our rainy Northwest climate . The full collection is definitely one of my favorite looks for the upcoming season, featuring tailored cuts and a great color pallet. Band of Outsiders do it again with the full package, from the goods to the presentation of the product.

Rouges Gallery S/S 09'

Rouges Gallery have just released their S/S 09' look book on their blog, PTLDME. The line is based out of Portland, Maine, and this collection takes a heavy influence from nautical themes and the grunge movement of the early 90's. I wasn't a huge fan of their fall/winter collection but there were a few stand-out pieces. This collection looks solid, with a good range of pieces and a well put together lookbook featuring some nice photography from Carter Smith.

throwback - The RZA Presents: Afro Samurai OST

on new year's day I re-watched Afro Samurai, the now-classic manga miniseries directed by Fuminori Kizaki and featuring the vocal talents of Samuel L. Jackson as the title character and his frenetic sidekick. released in early '07, the Afro Samurai OST contains much of the RZA's most inventive and exploratory arrangements and compositions. erie synth/string atmospheres and skeletal beat patterns intersect with guest verses from artists such as GZA, Talib Kweli, Thea, and Big Daddy Kane. complimenting the film perfectly, this is definitely one of my all-time favorite soundtracks. the tracks together posted are sequential on the album, and really highlight the overall cohesive sound of the project.

after a few months of debate, I finally broke down and bought an iPhone. the 3G internet, glossy widescreen, and insane app availability were all strong selling features for me, but the thing that made me hesitate for so long was the impending loss of Blackberry Messenger. with my 20 or so contacts being basically my sole form of communication, losing that instant back-and-forth is going to be a weird change in my day-to-day. all I'm really saying is that bbm is/was awesome, and I'm going to miss it a lot <3.

wants and needs: Canon G10

Recently I have really been getting back into photography (more specifically film photography), but I have been looking to get a new digital camera. I have a compact Canon Elph but was really looking to step to the DSLR range. The only problem that I find with a regular DSLR is the lack of portability and sheer bulk size. I wanted a camera that I could fit into my pocket but still had the capabilities and functions of performing like a DSLR. Through plenty of research I came across the newest member of the G series from Canon, the G10. It has all the functions of a DSLR but is the size of a compact digital camera. It has the option of shooting RAW format with 14.7 mega pixels as well as many other notable functions. Not only are the functions and features right up my alley but it is also very well designed and aesthetically pleasing. It has the look of a vintage style camera and is also constructed like a tank. All in all I'm very happy with the camera so far, so if you're in the market for a new digital take a look at the G10 - it is a winner in all categories in my books.

Now a days I am not really into graphic tee shirt companies, as I would generally prefer a little more depth to a line. Sometimes there is an exception to the rule, and in this case it is Seattle's Actual Pain. They are a small company but have been making their mark with great designs and solid collaborations with like-minded brands such as Flying Coffin, Italian brand Vanguard, and most recently Mishka. With hardcore death-metal inspired graphics and a "don't give a fuck" attitude, Actual Pain are ones to watch out for.

since we didn't start this blog until November, we missed the opportunity to cover many of our favorite designers when they dropped their F/W 08 collections. Public School (like Corpus) is one of my favorite brands that has yet to show their spring/summer 09 line.. so here is a look back at my fav styles from this season. leather, wool, flannels.. the clean/dirty dichotomy continues. look for more leather (PS remains one of the only labels to invest deeply in the material), sharply tailored shirts with dramatics embellishments, and more biker/rock/thug/schoolboy inspired high/low couture in the S/S 09 collection.

Engineered Garments Spring/Summer 2009

The Spring 2009 collection from Engineered Garments has recently been previewed on their website. The lookbook in very well put together with great styling and wonderful pieces. I love the color pallet, lots of olive green, dark reds, navy blue and khaki done with great complimentary fabrics. Also, the usage of bold patterns and the matching tops and bottoms are a really interesting look. Once again Engineered Garments comes correct with a nice range of looks and pieces, making them one of my favorite lines at the moment.

it has been snowy and sub-zero here in Victoria for the last week and it shows no signs of letting up, with the forecast calling for cold and ice all the way to the new year. besides all the snow, the salt and sand make it less than ideal for getting out for a ride. this is making me crazy - there is only so many track stand sessions I can do in my living room (at least I have hardwood..). anyway, Tracko just posted this vid and it's really helping me live vicariously through these rippers.

ad appreciation: Hedi Slimane for Prada spring 2009

Prada have recently teamed up with designer/photographer Hedi Slimane to shoot an ad for their Spring 2009 campaign. Slimane, the former designer for Dior Homme, has never worked with Prada before, and after leaving Dior last year Slimane has really been focusing on his photography. For this shoot Slimane took black and white portraits of Claude and Louis Simonon, the sons of Paul and Trish Simonon, the bass player and manager of the The Clash. In a statement Prada said the brothers were photographed "in moments of reflection and introspection. It is a symbolic yet understated approach to desire in mens wear; a new classicism with a rebel edge."

the subject of the first ever post on 84/85, Rusko is back with his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, KILLING it with the heavy wobbly isht and off-kilter tempos. this sound looks to be one of the big things to come in 09 as producers move past 4/4 bangers into more inventive sounds, many of which are showcased on this mix. pick this one up and thump it hard.

Vinchen is an artist based out of Columbus, OH. the always-excellent Wooster Collective recently did an interview with him that featured some great answers to some poignant questions (ex: Q. 'what do you fear the most?' A. Engineered Garments duffle

Cut Copy + the Golden Filter

it's been a HUGE year for Cut Copy.. not to sound snobbish, but the little band I've loved since 'Bright Like Neon Love' has absolutely blown up. and it is well, well deserved.. these guys are true pioneers, leading the inventive Australian charge. their '08 album 'In Ghost Colours' is definitely one of my favorites of the year, and their concert I attended in Toronto was one of my year's best as well ('Hearts on Fire' live = the tops). Modular recently released 'Far Away' as their next digital single, including remixes from Hercules and Love Affair, Damn Arms, and the Golden Filter. one of my favorite favorite lines is Corpus, based out of LA. this time of year a lot of lines are showing their full spring/summer 09 collections, and Corpus is yet to even give us a peak! these are some of my favorite looks from their f/w 08 line.. and here is a good interview with the designers. look for their s/s 09 collection to continue in the en-masse trend towards americana-inspired materials and tailoring, as many designers move away from super-skinny fits and flashier prints.

80 Blocks from Tiffany's is a documentary about New York street gangs in the South Bronx from 1979. The film depicts life as it was in the late 70's and early 80's in that neighborhood and the hard times and deprivation in this poverty stricken area. It was these types of hard time and the accompanying lifestyles that birthed the culture of early hip-hop music. These types of gangs and groups were formed out of necessity in order to get together and survive in these harsh conditions, and the music and culture was a way for people to escape these realities. It is an eight part video but it is well worth the full watch.

Damien Hirst Art Directs The Hours New Video

The Hours new music video for their single, 'See the Light' is art directed by Damien Hirst, and made by 'American History X' director Toney Kaye. The video features Sienna Miller as the crazed, suicidal main character of the video, running through a series of interesting scenarios. The Hours first album also featured artwork from Hirst as well as their next album titled 'See the Light'. Not a bad person to have on your team, Hirst is arguably one of the greatest artists of our time.

during the ongoing process to sharpen up the edges of my dirtbag life I always find time to listen to some good metal. at the tops of the go-to list are Bison b. c. out of Vancouver.. solid thrash power metal at it's finest, Bison get me jacked to ride / vacuum hard. their just-released album 'Quiet Earth' (on Metal Blade records) is mad solid, and the title track is prolly the most badass of all.

as you've probably seen, a whole new generation is embracing the iconic domestic workwear manufactures of years past. 84/85 is no different.. there's a constant vintage shopping battle taking place between us, a search for the nicest prints and fits by labels such as Pendleton, Woolrich, and LL Bean. and I guess the mainstream media has taken notice.. even though they manage to drop the most cliched narrowing term of 2008 (hipster), I gotta give it up to the LA Times for writing this well-informed article on the trend. I think the major difference between these brands from the past and the and imitations you see from followers today (who are mostly fashion labels) is the authenticity.. but that's a different subject entirely.

this is the winning entry by MVRDV Architects in a competition to design a sustainable community in the suburbs of Seoul. all the buildings are terraces, edged with boxed planters to create the look of a 'hill.' the voids in the buildings are to create semi-public spaces along with light and ventilation. all told, the community aims to house 77,000 people and should be completed by the end of 2011 (!).

leave it to people outside North America to show us what the future will look like.. where's my sustainable hill community Stephen Harper?!

one thing I've yet to cover on 84/85 is my love for Japan. the nuance of the culture is fascinating.. so much more variety (and not to mention advancement) than here in North America. an example of this is a new beer by my favorite Japanese brewery, Asahi. alcoholic vegtable-ish drinks have been all the rage in Japan for a while, and I guess this another extension of that trend.

A few nights ago I watched 'Maestro,' a documentary examining the origins of DJing and dance club culture in New York City from the early 1970's through the late 80's. The footage the filmakers tracked down is incredible, with shots of the Paradise Garage in full rave mode to some of the very first ever actual mixing of records. The interviews are insightful, conducted with luminaries such as David Mancuso, Nicky Siano, and Frankie Knuckles. Much of the discussion during the film centers around the the legend of Larry Levan and the various seminal venues he and the other original DJs of the NYC scene helped create.

I also really enjoyed how the film delved in to the aspect of sound in these clubs. the soundsystems and techs at the time were on the cutting edge, putting out bass frequency never before heard and top-end support that was a new kind of clear (and news levels of altogether loudness). Interviewing sound technicians from the clubs added another angle to the movie, which I thought really contributed to the all-around educational quality of the doc.

here is the first chapter of the movie - you can watch all 9 parts on youtube, and I would definitely encourage anyone interested in the origins of a scene they may or may not be a part of to do so.

my favorite part of the whole doc come at 6:30 in this clip when DJ Antonio Ocasio talks about his favorite musical moment at the Garage. AMAZING.

we didn't have high-speed internet! we were probably still playing Oregon trail! now kids are growing up in an era of instant information and interaction in a way that puts them in a dominant position in the future against the generation before (me).

I guess this is the way its always been, but it still scares me - conversely, are the tweens of today going to be all screwed up psychologically/socially in the future due to an over-emphasis on a false internet reality? s0000 many questions..

Blu returns to Berlin

Street artist Blu who is famous for his large scale wall paintings, as well as wall animations, is back at it again with this huge piece in Berlin. The video shows the progress of the painting, and a little incite into his process. we had to go with the vids on this one.. mid 1990's to early 200's Wu Tang was the best for two reasons. first, the lyricism is some of the best of all time, and second, the style was as equally untouchable. Ghostface Killah is prolly the 84/85 favorite.. the NY swagger is massive.

I've been wearing jeans to laze around the house for years now. I just never felt like I should be one of those doods who bum it up in oversized nike workout isht when on the couch.. but recently that changed. maybe it's all the PBR-induced hangovers, or maybe I'm just getting older.. either way, I've been on the hunt for a good pair of sweats for a hot minute. here's a look at the Fall/Winter 08' collection from Engineered Garments, as seen on Odin New York online store. I've been seeing a few pieces from the the F/W 08' line around and really liked the styling. Daiki Suzuki, the designer of the collection, has taken inspiration from "1920's and 30's coal miners, loggers, railroaders and construction workers, and how they lived their lives, specifically how wool tailored jackets and trousers were todays jeans and t-shirts." Urban Outfitters: Space 15 Twenty

love them or hate them, you cant deny it - Urban Outfitters are good at what they do. they have their market down pat, consistently stay in tune with what is happening, and keep up with the retail curve. this time around U.O. have opened a "retail experiment" called Space 15 Twenty. the project allows them "to collaborate with creative brands we find inspiring and interesting." right now this includes: Alife, What Come Around Goes Around, We the Free, Hennessey + Ingalls, Snack Bar, Samantha Pleet, and Hope Gallery. The space is looking great with lots of wood, exposed brick, and complimented by that huge Andy Rementer billboard. It is located in a warehouse turned "hipster strip mall", off Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles. another great move in the retail world from the folks at Urban Outfitters - it should be interesting to see where this project goes. Jason Charles Beck, aka Gonzales, is a man of extremes. from his days in an alternative rock band to his European hip-hop phase (as well as collaborating with the likes of Feist and Jamie Lidell), Beck has shown the public many different faces. and none of these are more striking than his 2004 album 'Solo Piano,' a purely-instrumental effort that bears close resemblance to the work of Erik Satie (wikipedia agrees with me on this). a perfect soundtrack for fall and winter, 'Solo Piano' falls in to my piano library alongside the likes of Ravel and Reich.

Alden Shoes: Chukka and Indy Boot

The Alden shoe company got its start back in 1884 focusing on comfort and craftsmaship, with each shoe being hand made in the US, and they still carry on this tradition to this day. They have a great selection of Oxfords and Brogues but it was the Chukka and Indy boots that really caught my eye. These Chukka boots are a timeless style, done in tan suede with a white contract stitch and a beatiful wood and leather sole. Secondly the Indy boot, these are the real stand out piece in my mind. With classic work wear styling, constructed of beautiful waxhide leather with the mocc style toe these are a great look for Fall and Winter. Pabst Blue Ribbon as we know it today is the beer of choice for hipsters and alts all over North America. From Vancouver to Montreal, Portland to New York, you can find it being served at a grimey bar in a seedy area near you. This wasn't always the direction Pabst (also known as PBR) was headed - the company first got its start in 1882 in Milwaukee and was originally marketed as a luxury beer to an upper class market. as time went on the it was later marketed as a beer for everybody and was no longer seen as a high class. The beer was popular throughout the middle of the century, but in the 80's and 90's PBR went almost unseen. it wasn't till the early 2000's that Pabst made a huge comeback on the market. It was endorsed by the hipster scene and soon became a somewhat of a cult classic. I personally get down with Pabst - the price is right and the taste is good, it is basically the equivalent of Lucky but with a little more alt clout. Bryce Kushnier is a talented guy. by way of his lo-fi electronic alter ego Vitaminsforyou he has released two of my all-time favorite albums - 2003's 'I'm Sorry for Ever and for Always' and 2006's 'the Legend of Bird's Hill.' exploring and even expanding on the IDM terrain set forth by artists like Jimmy Tamborello, Kushnier has captured the attention of listeners worldwide who appreciate rich texture and attention to detail in their music. having also played in both Do Make Say Think and Fritz Helder and the Phantoms, Kushnier is a versatile musician who's skills encompass many genres and styles, making him one of the leading figures in the Canadian arts scene today. alright, enough fan boy-ing.. since relocating from Winnipeg to Toronto, Kushnier has been collaborating like crazy and working on his long-delayed new album (tentatively titled 'He Closed His Eyes.. Last night the always-excellent CBC Newsworld program the Fifth Estate aired a compelling documentary entitled 'the Gospel of Green.' taking a hard look at why our Canadian governing bodies are so resistant to a real green shift in our ways of producing power, the doc showcased Hermann Scheer, a German MP who has been the driving force in both his native land and Europe as a whole when it comes to viable renewable energy sources, namely solar. the statistics are astounding. combining solar with wind and hydro sources, Germany is on pace to be energy self-sufficient within the next ten years. our Canadian politicians could learn a lot from Dr. Scheer, who fought corporate interest in Germany for years before he finally won out and started his green revolution. it's time the financial benefits of renewable energy be made widely known to the public, so that the catalyst for us to put real pressure on our leaders for viable change can finally occur. for more on 'the Gospel of Green,' go here.

Here is a look at Japanese label Deluxe's Autumn/Winter 08' collection. This is just another example of how the Japanese are taking traditional American work wear styles and reinventing them with quality construction, materials and tailored cuts. As of late I have really been getting back into photography, more specifically film in order to get that vintage feel. I have also been really into motorbikes and the culture surrounding them. So when I came across this photo set on Flickr I was absolutely blown away. The photos are incredible, they look so genuine and authentic. Everything from the bikes they're riding to their fashion styles (a white tee and jeans will always be a classic). The Kooples is a fresh new Parisian brand, launched september 1st 2008 for the fall/winter season. created by the same three brother who launched Comptoir des Cotonniers (a widely successful woman's line who's boosters have included Carla Bruni), the line is centered around skinny fits, classic rock/punk styles refined, and a good dose of androgyny. in their words;

'the Kooples is a return of street chic, a London-Paris mindset, a musical inclination, fashion as a manifest, and a cloakroom for two. for five minutes or the last fifteen years, for one night, for some time, it is a way of life, a game'

deep. regardless, the brand looks tight top to bottom, and gauging by the solid base that Comptoir des Cotonniers has laid for them in the design/production department, it shouldn't be long before the brand establishes a North American presence.

anyone who's sifted through music blogland over the last few years should be familiar with Trouble & Bass founder Luca Venezia, aka Drop the Lime, aka Curses! probably the forward-thinking artist in the realm of heavy bass, the Brooklyn resident has explored many different genres through his recordings, from glitchy drum 'n bass to superpretty dubstep to wobbly 4/4 bangers. incorporated into much of his Drop the Lime work, Luca is also known for being one of the few (if any) electronic producers who sing on their own tracks - and anyone who's seen DTL live knows that he has a pretty intense and soulful delivery. since most electronic music blogs are generally focused on dance-oriented music, it is primarily the 4/4 side of Luca's work that gets the most attention. however, there are many tracks from his back catalogue of more avant recordings that are serious gems - these two tracks come from the Shot Shot Hearts EP, released on Tigerbeat6 back in 2006. both showcase Luca's unique singing voice and his talent for varied production which surpasses the vast majority of his contemporaries.

Graffiti vs. Street Art: Brazilian style

Lately there has been a lot of tension in the word of street art and graffiti. To the average person or art critic they may seem like they are based on the same principals, but when it comes down to it, in their purest forms they are nothing alike. It would be like comparing a lion in the zoo to one on the plains of Africa, not exactly the same. Recently in Brazil the conflict has hit the front lines, or better yet the gallery as a group of 30 "Pixadores" stormed the Choque Cultural Gallery in protest against the "marketing, institutionalization and domestication of street art". These are some very strong and direct actions, but whether you hate it or love they are about their business.

Band of Outsiders keep bringing the heat for their SS 09' collection. This time around they have put together this wonderful video piece. It is nice to see the collection shown of to the full potential, on and being worn. The video is very interesting, with the models wearing the clothes in the most awkward ways, giving it a surreal feel. The collection is looking very strong and with presentation and creativity like this it is the full package in my books. Take a look for yourself...
